September for PRSA and SCPRSA is ethics month. I hope to
raise your awareness of ethics.
Ethics is moral principles that govern a person's or group's
behavior. Keep in mind you need to think as if you had “skin in the game.”
Earlier, I posted the tobacco issue and the dilemma one
could see between the hazards of tobacco, health and corporate profits. A current correlation may be in the food
industry. Poverty, obesity, sugar and
corporate profits are in the news. Granted there are conflicting opinions on
sugar and the myriad of products containing it, but the science seems to point
a direct line from excessive sugar consumption to obesity and/or poor health.
So, if you are promoting the big gulp, a 24-ounce soda, or
the oversized milk shake, do you assume the customer should be aware of what
the excess sugar content has for long term health? Where is the line? When do
we persuaders have rethink our ethics?
In our society there are many issues that should make us
think about ethics and the golden rule. Many of them are not black and white;
they must be considered individually and personal conclusions drawn. I trust this example has made you think about
ethics.
