September for PRSA and SCPRSA is ethics month. I hope to
raise your awareness of ethics.
Ethics is moral principles that govern a person's or group's
behavior.
According to John C. Maxwell, author of “There’s No Such
Thing as ‘Business’ Ethics,” the best principle to follow on ethics is the
“Golden Rule.” He says many cultures express the golden rule in very similar
ways as the Christian covenant that says – do unto others as you would have
them do unto you. That is about as simple as it gets. If we could follow this
rule, life would be simple, too. We wouldn’t have too many ethical issues.
Rationalization and motivation could be stilled on ethical matters. There would
be many “Win Win” outcomes as Steven Covey urges in the “Seven Habits of
Success People.”
- Do you think your company adheres to the golden rule?
- Do you practice it in your personal life?
- Is this too simple to be practical? Why?
In our society there are many issues that should make us
think about ethics and the golden rule. Many of them are not black and white;
they must be considered individually and personal conclusions drawn. I trust this example has made you think about
ethics.
