By now surely everyone associated with Penn State University -- the administration, alumni and even the most casual Nittany Lion fan -- would like the whole Jerry Sandusky affair to just go away. Everyone, it seems, except the family of legendary coach Joe Paterno, who passed away this winter before Sandusky's trial and a report commissioned by the university seemed to confirm suspicions of Paterno's complicity.
Paterno's family, understandably concerned about how these events might tarnish the coach's otherwise stellar reputation, has fought the allegations with unexpected vigor. Today they promised their own investigation aimed at "uncovering the truth" and rivaling the one PSU trustees hired former FBI Director Louis Freeh to conduct, as noted in this Associated Press article.
Jonathan Bernstein of Bernstein Crisis Management Group Inc. is quoted in the article as saying he would have advised Paterno's family to issue a "short message of compassion" for Sandusky's victims and conduct its own investigation behind the scenes, rather than publicly condemning Freeh's findings.
